Got my set today, and wanted to post my thoughts on it.
Freddy Vs. Jason 2 pack by NECA, review by Travis Sallenbach
I’m going to split these guys up, as they are both very worthy of being single release figures, so I’m going to treat them as such.
sculpture
Freddy
Likes: Fantastic sculpture, NECA really captured the look of Freddy very nicely here. Posture, body structure, and the pose all scream Freddy the burned guy! The detailing of the clothes, especially the sweater, is fantastic! A very cool little add on is, when you remove the head, there is a bloody stump there! Not just a plain area painted red, but an actual sculpted stump! All 3 heads also have this bloody stump sculpture as well. Couldn’t ask for better! Robert Englund has one of the toughest mugs to copy, not an easy task at all, and NECA has done a fairly good job of getting the proper look down with all 3 heads, not perfect on the normal, and decapitated heads, but damn good for this scale! The glove on Freddy is stunning for this scale, 18” it might be slightly lacking, but for 7” you’re not gonna get much better! The finger and blade details really show you how far NECA has gone for the fans. Another great aspect of the glove is the material the blades were made from, a quite ridged plastic that holds it’s shape perfectly! (by no means the very generic, floppy bladed glove of McFarlanes 2 Freddy attempts) However, be careful with them, I could easily see them breaking after one dive from a shelf.
Gripes: Although it is damn good, there is just something off about the normal Freddy head sculpture, can’t quite place it, but there is something there, or not there. (maybe it’s just a case of me being to anal) His left hand sculpture is also another sore point for me, it looks fine, but it is kind of an odd pose. Lastly, his stance. Good for the pose, but you pretty much have to use the base if you don’t want Fred to take a shelf dive. I like the option of using the base or not.
Overall: 8.5 out of 10
Jason
Likes: Pretty much everything! Size, stance, clothing detail, face, all are excellently done! One of the coolest things about Jason’s clothes is they are actually layered. He’s got a dirty shirt as his torso, made with the same material as his legs, head and arms, then he has the torn up gray sweat shirt in soft PVC plastic, and to top It off the shredded burlap jacket also in a soft PVC plastic. Not really necessary, but a very nice little addition to the figure! His normal hands are also done with the soft PVC, this is great as it allows for a better hold of his machete.
Gripes: As with Freddy, Jason’s left hand is a bit of a complaint. It looks great when he’s holding the machete in a ‘swing’ pose, but when you swap hands for the Freddy head holding hand, you can’t really get him to grip the machete very well at all. I think a second alternate hand would have been greatly helpful here.
Overall: 9 out of 10
Paint
Freddy
Likes: With Freddy’s costume there really isn’t too many colors, red, green, brown black. But they are applied almost flawlessly. The sweater is the little darker red and green of the movie, and has a great black wash giving it a slightly grimy look. The pants are a good light brown, again with a nice black wash. Neither have any paint bleed, even where the sweater meet the pants. The big spots here are the heads, glove and hand, and all look pretty damn good! The heads are about perfect, no bleed, good clean lines, and proper tones. The eyes on the normal head are great, no crossing at all. But, on my Demon head, they are just slightly off, not terrible, but noticeable. The left hand matches the normal head great, and will work with the Demon head as well. The glove is another high spot in the paint department, great copper coloring with a light dirty wash. The glove itself is the right color, and there is no bleed at all between it and the hand underneath. The blood on the stumps is very nice too, good red color, with a light black wash to bring out the details.
Gripes: The left hand has an odd spot on the back, looks like it’s done with a different paint then the head wounds, probably the same stuff as used on the neck wounds. The gloves blades are maybe a bit to clean, should have had a light black wash to give them a ‘used’ look. As I said, the eyes on my Demon head are a bit off, watch this when you’re picking your set.
Overall: 9.5 out of 10
Jason
Likes: As with Freddy, the body is done pretty much flawlessly, great colors, and no bleed at all! The head has some fantastic veining, and shading. The eyes are about perfect, no crossing at all. A big problem with using 2 different materials that meet, (ie. The soft PVC of the jacket and the arms) is getting the color to match up right, NECA has done this perfectly, just looking at the figure you wouldn’t be able to tell there was a difference between the plastics.
Gripes: The skin tone is just a bit too light I think. It’s more of a light gray, where Jason had a darker purplish coloring in the movie. Not a terrible thing, but not exactly accurate either. And here is a pure fan boy geek complaint, his sweater is just a touch too blue, same with his undershirt.
Overall: 8.5 out of 10
Articulation
Freddy
Likes: Now, these figures are more statues, then highly articulated toys, and appropriately so. But there is a thin line between useful articulation, and wasteful articulation. Freddy has 10 points, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists (right is ball jointed) waist and feet. All are quite useful and add a lot to the figure! The cut elbows allow for some nice poses, and the ball jointed right wrist REALLY helps achieve some cool menacing stances! The right shoulder is great, in that either by design, or accident, the top and bottom line up fairly well with the torso joint, allowing you to turn the shoulder 360 degrees to make for a new cool pose! Thus defeating the McFarlane singleposeitis.
Gripes: Jeeze, this is weird, I don’t have one complaint for Freddy’s articulation!
Overall: 10 out of 10
Jason
Likes: He has 9 points, neck, shoulders, left elbow, wrists, waist and feet. The shoulder articulation is good for the machete holding poses, you can get some great menacing stances with him! The wrist articulation helps a ton with these poses as well.
Gripes: Unfortunately, Jason dose have an example of those wasteful joints, and lacks others. The left elbow articulation is pretty much useless, if you move it, the jacket lines don’t match up and it looks kinda funny. The big joint he is missing is the right elbow, why not include that? Would have helped a lot for a few machete poses, and it would have been a ton better for the Freddy head holding. Unlike in the movie, he can not hold Freddy’s head down by his side, it kind of sticks out a bit and looks slightly odd. The addition of this joint would have easily made Jason a 10 as well, but it hurts the score a lot with out it.
Overall: 7 out of 10
Accessories
Freddy
Likes: Freddy comes with his hat, a second Demon head, and his half of the base. All make sense and work pretty well with the figure! The hat is very nicely detailed, and fits the normal head good. It also will fit the Demon head if you’d rather, but seeing as this wasn’t in the movie, I doubt many people who have seen the movie, and own a brain will display him like this. The Demon head fits very nicely, and looks great too!
Gripes: Like I said, the Demon head does have slightly crossed eyes. The hat is not bad, but it could be made of the same soft PVC Jason’s coat is made from. It would make for a much better fit and look.
Overall: 8.5 out of 10
Jason
Likes: Jason comes with his mask, machete, alternate hand and decapitated Freddy head. (I list this with Jason, as it is meant for him, and just looks stupid on Freddy) The mask is just outstanding for this scale, great shape and size, and really really nice paint! Even the freakin straps are movie accurate! I am very impressed with this overall. The machete is also extremely well done, perfect shape to the blade, and great size with the figure. The paint is excellent as well. A couple of the coolest accessories in recent memory are the alternate hand and severed Freddy head! There were a couple different ways they could have gone with this, and I thought for sure it would be the old hole and pin method. I was very pleasantly surprised when I learned it would be a magnet system, but I was worried the magnet would be too weak to hold the head, being as small as it needed to be. No worries now! It holds the head with surprising strength, no way it would fall off on display! You can’t even tell there is a magnet in the head, it does show in the palm of the hand, but does not look bad.
Gripes: Again, mostly fan boy geek gripes, the forehead triangle on the mask is too rounded. The machete handle is black, and not the proper white. The alternate hand has the full fingers instead of the cut off fingers in the movie. Lastly, the Freddy head has a neck peg. This is pretty goofy since a, Freddy never looked like this while he had his head on and b, it just looks stupid when it’s on the body. The way it’s designed, it looks like he’s looking at his feet.
Overall: 9.5 out of 10
Base
Likes: This needed it’s own section as it is pretty big, and a very cool accessory! The detailing is pretty nice on both bases, the floor boards are sculpted nicely, and they fit together perfectly, and have no paint discrepancy. The flames are an extremely difficult thing to do and have look right, NECA has done about a good a job as possible here, great sculpting job, and very nice paint work! Another cool little bonus is the small plaque with Freddy Vs. Jason written in the movie motif. This is free floating, so you can put it anywhere it’ll fit, another nice thing! Most importantly, the bases hold the figures perfectly. The pegs are spaced exactly right, and the figures fit over them with relative ease.
Gripes: The floor boards could have done with a bit of a darker black wash, they look pretty clean. The flames, although pretty damn nice, might be a touch on the pastel/bright side.
Overall: 9 out of 10
Overall score: 8.5 out of 10 This is a fantastic set every Jason and Freddy fan should own! Not perfect, but pretty damn close! I’d highly recommend it for sure.
Note to customizers: There is some work to be done here if you’re as picky as me. First things I did was to trim the finger of the alternate hand to the right length, and cut off the peg from the severed Freddy head. I also plan to add more blood to the severed head’s neck, and the cut off fingers. I’ll fix the Demon head’s eyes, and paint the machete’s handle the proper white, and perhaps add blood. I’ll also do a light black wash on Freddy’s glove blades. I’ll also add is a nice black wash to the base floor boards.
