How Do You Do It?

This is something that has been on my mind ever since I became a part of the mask collecting scene. How does every here find the money to afford these great masks? Now, I\'m not complaining about the prices on these things, but...man they can get damn expensive. Is this where all of your spending money goes? Are you just a wealthy person? Do your parents buy these things for you? I mean, In my situation, I have to work 4-5 days a week at my job, and have other bills (insurence, cable internet, etc.) to pay for. I\'m not always left with very much money to do anything with. I dunno, it\'s just wierd seeing people ordering masks like crazy...Meh, maybe some of you have just gotten a nice little stash from selling masks to other people as well. Meh, whatever the reason is, I\'m just curious.

yup, that\'s life. Some people have more money then others, so some people can afford to collect higher end/higher priced pieces.

Personally *imo and all that* it really only bugs me with the Myers. I hate how overpriced Myers has gotten. But a piece like the beautiful Wolf that Chad just got is obviously worth the price he paid for it.

Other guys here are just \'trade masters.\' They build up a collection worth a certain amount of money, and then that collection gives them a little room to play around, trade, make deals and stuff.

and then some of us are just poor as hell and we\'ve got to try and save like mad if there\'s a piece we really want. Save and hope to hell you can get in on the run if it\'s a limited run. That\'s what always seems to happen to me. When I have money put aside for the \'next great mask\' nothing interesting comes out. Then of course when something cool does come out it\'s usually right when I\'m broke, lol.

and of course, some of us started making stuff cuz we couldn\'t afford to buy all the stuff we wanted. Or were disappointed with the quality of the things we bought and thought we could make better.

Then you\'ve got stuff that\'s overhyped and overpriced. At the end of the day you buy what you can and hopefully don\'t sink yourself into a ton of debt collecting this stuff.

Some of them have really good paying jobs, and some just save and I guess do put the majority of their extra cash into the hobby. Good question though. And glad to see someone else is on the same page with me about Myers masks.

Yeah there\'s quite a few Myers I\'d like to have, but I don\'t want to spend $1,500. on 5-6 thin latex masks that aren\'t even original pieces.

I haven\'t bought a new Myers since the first Neme came out through CGP. Though I gotta admit I\'ve really been eyeballing the Boogeyman75 lately and am trying to work out something with David.

i dont see how myers mask are over priced some are 100 some are 275 jsut depends on how real and acc they look and the fact its not mass produced...only complain i have is people gettin way too cocky and really overcharging even the blanks i mean 300-500 for a blank peice of resin is rediculous since a bust lets say the size of a human head or a little bigger only cost aroun 10 to make and the molds maybe aroun 60 depending on silcion used..thats what i dont get hell thats like selling Hockey Mask blanks for 200

In my experience, I am in the category of having to save for them. I have been a part of this hobby for over 10 years, yet I have a very small collection as compared to others. Some of the pieces were gifts and others I got really really good deals on. I work over 40 hours a week and have all the bills that anyone else my age would have ala insurance, car note, student loans, cc bills, etc....I also have a fiance working her way through school that I have to help support, as well as my mother and father I help out.....so money is always tight with me.

My opinion on the state of the hobby is this....there is something out there for everyone and for every price range. It all depends upon what you want and what you can afford. 8 years ago, it was much, much harder to find anything that didnt cost an arm and a leg. Those people that have just gotten into this hobby in the last 5 years or so do not realize how truly lucky they are with the choices they have out there. I remember a time when there were only a very small handful of people doing independent stuff and making it available to the public. You could name every Hockey Mask maker out there on one hand and still have fingers left....just be grateful for what you do have...and not worry about what you dont have....and what others have...

Very well said Tommy, and that goes for so many things in life not just masks.

For me and I dare say everyone else here masks and movie replicas are our hobby so this is what we spend our disposable income on. Some take 2 or 3 holidays a year, some buy a new car every year, some go out wining and dining every night, we buy masks. Bill\'s right about timing, sometimes you see a piece you must have just as you\'ve got the cash to spare but at other times you want it but just can\'t swing it so you just save for a while then snag it. Either way you\'ll love it when it lands on your door step and who cares if others have already got a copy sat on their shelves, it doesn\'t take away that feeling when you first open up that lovely brown box.

I think everyone puts different values on items but one persons $50 indy mask gives them the exact same excitement when they first get it as another persons $500 piece. No matter what hobby your in there\'s always something better out there you dream of, some will save, some will get themselves in debt to grab it and some will just dream and carry on loving what they\'ve already got. As for the prices of pieces in this hobby most of us here can tell the difference between a $30 store bought piece of crap and a $300 independent replica. We can see where the artist has spent his time, used his skills and followed his heart but others can\'t. Try taking one of your prized pieces in to work and telling a regular joe non collector you paid $200, $300, $400 etc and just look at their face. They\'ll think your a tub of potato salad short of a buffet :wacko:
