What kind of latex are you using? I\'m guessing that you probably have the Monster Makers latex, right? They had two kinds, that I can remember. Soft and Firm. We\'ve used both, and absolutely hated the Firm Grade shit. The Soft Grade is pretty good stuff, but we don\'t use it anymore. It all depends on the thickness you are going for. We usually fill the mold to the brim and let it sit for about an hour. Then we dump the latex back out into the bucket and let whatever excess latex that is in the mold leak out onto the ground (you could also sit it on a bucket, incase you don\'t want to lose it). We fill it back up about thirty minutes laters and dump it out a minute later. Another thirty minutes later, do the same thing. Depending on how thick or thin and watery your latex is, you may be able to fill it anywhere from two to five times. But hey, that\'s your call. You may need to experiment with what you have. Sit the mold infront of a fan for a few hours to speed up the drying process, this will save you a lot of time. If you need anymore help, don\'t be shy about asking me.

hey thanks Don
umm yeah I have the soft and I\'m pretty much doing what you said I have to let it sit overnight before I pull it right? Thanks

ok I think I\'m going to leave it at 4 layers
then pull it tomorrow

Just be patient and let it dry on it\'s own - Unless you are in some kind of hurry and feel compelled to make masks as fast as you can. LOL

yeah I let it sit overnight and it\'s still kinda wet in some spots so I guess I still have to wait

let it dry 18 to 24 hours before you pull it out
also try filling the mold and pouring out breaking air bubbles and pushing latex into cracks with airbrush (but not so the air dries the latex, or begins to dry it) re-pour immediately and let dwell for desired time this "detail coat" will ;lessen the chances of bubbles and missed spots expecially in the ears and chin, or highly detailes areas

We have pulled masks that were both fan and air dried and seen no difference between them. It is possible that there would be a slight amount of shrinkage, but latex tends to do that no matter what you do. Also, there are many different brands and types of latex in this world, and it all depends on what kind you are using. I\'d rather be able to pull out a mask the next day then have to wait two or three days just because the mask might shrink a tiny little bit. Many companies fan dry their masks, especially ones that have to get a lot of them out quickly. Arnold from Monster Makers told us about using a fan, and I even believe that Justin does that same thing. When you need to get things done "fast" to fill all your orders, this is a great way to do it. Hell, some people even dump baby/talcum powder into their molds to dry up the latex. You should see how many you can manage to pull out doing this.

any way you speed up the drying is going to shrink the mask more. you may not notice by looking at it , but if it is tight fitting mask the extra size in the circumference might make a big difference
putting talc into the mold reduces the amount of plaster that is pulled away from the mold when you pull the latex out, allowing the mold to yield more pulls. putting talk inside the mask itself while it is still in the mold prevents it from sticking to itself when you try to remove it from the mold. |
