Finally a Prequel and not a Remake!!!

not a full prequel also a remake.

I know there have been rumors of a prequel for a long time, but I hate to say it, this sounds like a remake to me. I'm sure it will have more backstory, but "relaunching" the series means starting over. If it doesn't have Robert Englund as Freddy, the (Elm) streets will run red with the blood of studio executives.

I imagine it'll be like RZ's Halloween...part prequel, part remake where you still follow the storyline from the first but add more backstory. As for Englund returning, I'm torn. To me, doing this is a completely fresh new beginning for the character of Freddy Kreuger. With Englund as Freddy, it's tied too much into the original series and people won't be able to separate themselves from it...especially now that he's much older. Having a new Freddy will allow a complete disconnect from the original and hoepfully allow it to stand alone like the TCM remake does and RZ's Halloween. Now, I'm not saying it would be a better movie like this. Trying to overcome the icon that is Robert Englund as Freddy is not an easy task. Personally, I'd rather see them carry on witht he Nightmare series (with Englund) and Friday series (ideally with Hodder) and just keep making them. But that's the 80's kid in me that just wants to see more slashers <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"smile.gif\" /> I just think that if they are going to even consider re-doing Nightmare, just make it a clean break from the original series...

With jason and michael the actor is hiding behind a mask. I think they have a little more freedom to play with the part. Freddy has alot more personality and I think that's what we expect and love about England.. It don't know that I'd want to be the actor to step up and try to pull this one off. I think it would be interesting to see. I just don't feel another actor could pull it off.

If they should choose to go with a new actor for Freddy,it would only seem fitting that Robert himself chooses the actor in question. <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"thumbsup.gif\" />

Some good news, I think.I found an interview with Robert from about 3 weeks ago<a href=\"http://www.fearnet.com/MCNewsDetailPage.aspx?catid=30&mid=12389\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.fearnet.com/MCNewsDetailPage.as...0&mid=12389</a><!--quoteo<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE</div><div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecSince the rumors of a new Nightmare on Elm Street film have surfaced online, FEARnet is the first to hear it right from the mouth of that hideously disfigured child murderer! We just talked to Robert Englund (known by fans as the iconic Freddy Krueger) about his upcoming directorial venture Killer Pad (full interview soon) but in the mean time got his official word about the rumors of a new Nightmare on Elm Street film.<b>Recently there has been some buzz online about a new Nightmare on Elm Street film. Have you heard anything about this?</b>“I don’t know if it’s going to be Nightmare on Elm Street the original remake-which is not a bad idea especially with the success of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween-and get some new director to breathe new life into it. I always thought there was room for a prequel. I would be interested in being in that! It’s funny because they are all good. Texas Chainsaw Massacre the original was great and the original Halloween was great and some people even think that the original Nightmare on Elm Street is the best of them all. I don’t know if you’d want to remake it but it all happens sooner or later. There have been some spin-offs talked about with Freddy and Jason and Michael Myers which is interesting but maybe that’s kind of silly. Maybe one was enough. At one time there had been a prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street. I haven’t read that script but I heard things about it that John McNaughton the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer might direct it. That was kind of interesting. That’s the one I would be interested in being involved with.”<b>The Prequel?</b>“Well yeah because <i><b>I’d obviously get to do it </b></i>without the make up. Even though I’m getting old I’m not getting too old to play Freddy. I always figured by the time he was all burned and everything I figured he was in his 40’s anyway. I could pull that off. It’s going to be interesting to see what they do with it.”<!--QuoteEnd</div><!--QuoteEEndEmphasis mine, but he says right there "I'd obviously get to do it without the make up".

<!--quoteo<div class=\'quotetop\'>QUOTE</div><div class=\'quotemain\'><!--quotecEmphasis mine, but he says right there "I'd obviously get to do it without the make up".<!--QuoteEnd</div><!--QuoteEEndYeah, but that's before this deal with Platinum Dunes went down. Plus, Robert Englund really has no say at the end of the day...as unfortunate as that is. The fact is, the studio is going to do it however they see fit. No script is locked down since New Line said they wouldn't hire a writer until after the strike. So I would consider all previous ideas, scripts, off the table. I have a feeling Robert will have a cameo, but won't be Freddy. I'd love to see Robert back in the make-up, but I have a bad feeling it's not going to happen with this one.

Yeah, it's wishful thinking on my part, but I'm hoping this deal went down behind the scenes more than 3 weeks ago, and we're just hearing about it now.
