Looking For Info On Commisions

Looking for some info from scupltors out there. How does a commisioned piece work? I know they cost alot, but what do you get for your big $$$ ? Do you get rights to the mold? Does the sculptor get to sell copies such as a run? There is a scuplture that I haven't found but would love to see and I'm wondering how this type of thing goes.If you have any knowledge of how it goes, please throw in your 2cents..

it all depends Dan. You can of course commission an artist to sculpt, mold, cast and complete something for you and only you. This would include you getting the mold and the rights to do whatever you want with it....now.....you are talking about a serious, serious, serious price tag attached to something like that. You can also go the route that several have done in the past. Get several people together to commission an artist to complete a piece. If you do it this way, the cost is not nearly as much, and the artist knows they are going to make a set amount of money from the project. In respect to getting an artist to make you something and then they keep the mold to sell the piece, it's been my experience that most artists do not like doing that. The main reason is that there isn't much of a chance they will be able to make any money off the mold from others ordering the mask....take care,Tommy

To obi-wan you listen...One of a kind from a top sculptor is very very expensive...especially considering you really can't sell more and you have to make all your money off that one copy.But lets say you don't care if they make over 10, like Krazedkilla did with Dahone's U-Fuq, than you can get a much better deal.Basically he organized a bunch of people to get in on it and it sold quickly.You can get great deals though! I know Chris Russell of twisted toybox offers an insanely affordable commission right. I wouldn't want to speak for him but I think you can get a one of a kind for around 500$ which is absurd! Plus he's a great artist!D

I had spoken to JB at one time about a Bub and had it all lined up with an interest list of guys and whatnot, but it fell through because others had the same thing going on... Can't remember the details cause it left me with a bad impression of the whole idea..I could care less what happens with the mold and the sculptor would have a huge potential or sales. I'd say 20+ with no effort. BUT I just want a crisp clean piece out of the deal..Maybe I should contact a few sculptors directly.....

I know people have different ways of doing it, the way i do it is to offer a couple of options , a one off and the mould is destroyed,(which has only happened once), very pricey.I make the piece and you get to keep the mould (never happened), or the most popular, i make it and keep the mould, in return for a lower price.Now if someone wanted the mould, then i cost out how much revenue i could make on it, up to say ten finished heads, now thats a lot of moolah, what most people want is there own copy and are not bothered by others being able to have one.Thats the way i do it, works for me.

Every artists is different and has different terms. Contact the artist you have in mind and communicate with him to see if hes interested in doing the project. Then get into the money terms. I know in my past commissions with an artist we have a nice arrangement. He makes me a peice, he keeps the mold,but if he sells any other copies he cuts me a percentage of the sale since I'm co owner of the mold. Ita a nice arrangement. Like everyone else said one offs are expensive but a group commission is the smart and cheaper way to go. Wow $500 for a one off commission.That is dirt cheap.
