The M.J. thread got locked, but prior to that, an interesting discussion got going about the paranormal. I am particularly quite fascinated by these things, so why don't we share our ghostly experiences here? It would be cool to hear everyone's stories and opinions on ghosts and whatnot, but lets keep things civil. As for me, when I was three my family lived in a big house that used to be an all girl boarding home, and the spirit of an elderly woman remained. I would frequently see her and we would have conversations, and everyone else would always hear interesting things, but the only people who saw her were me and my 4 year old best friend. We even had an attic with one of those old cut off ladders leading to it, so it was pretty inaccessible, and one night, while everyone was asleep old music started playing, and our roommate's boyfriend investigated to find that the source was the attic, in which none of us ever went. Pretty spooky. It's strange, when you are young like that, ghosts are not creepy at all. In our current house, we live near Atlanta's biggest cemetery, literally across the street from it, so ghosts are around pretty often, strange shadowy figures around our house and what not. There is currently what sounds to be the spirit of a young woman in our house, who speaks to me on occasion, but when i try to talk back, I never get a response. My mom saw a middle-aged man hanging out in our kitchen recently as well, that freaked me out a bit. So, what about you guys?

When we moved from NY to NC, we were the first people to rent this house after the old owners died. It was a temporary house for a few months until our house was done being built, Well anyways dad had lived there alone for a few months before we got there, when our house in NY sold and we made it down there we had no furniture until to movers came, so we had to sleep in the living room...My brother who was maybe 11 at the time woke up in the middle of the night talking about an old lady outside looking at him. We payed it no attention, until odd hings started happening, heaters would be burning hot, but shut off, things would be moved around, just odd things. Nothing really hit me until one day my parents left for the day, and I stayed home, decide it was time to rock the hell out, so up went the tunes, and slam went a door, then the footsteps, then the loud "turn it down"...Well figuring they came back home, I ran out to see no one was home...so now thinking it was just something on the cd I went back to rockin out...until it happened again, only the footsteps were in the same room. I ran outside and waited until they got home that night before Id go back in, my dad then decides to sit us down and tell us that in the time he lived in the house alone before we got there, he would hear footsteps, all over the house, two voices talking to each other, but could never understand what was said, and also that he, on severl occasions, had seen the same old lady my brother had seen the first night we were there. Shortly after our house was built so we were moving and cleaning, appantly the woman had smoked...we were cleaning tar stains from in the bathroom, when my mom said something about how clan it was now, and the room started to smell like someone had lit a cigarette. After moving from the house we met the next family to rent the house, they also had similar things happen. The real estate company we rented the house from was also terrified of the place and hated going there to do anything. Not sure who lives there now, but I'd love to go back....Also had alot of crap happen while visiting a friend at Salem college in NC in the Gramley dorm hall, but then again that whole school is made from an old moravian settlement with a TON of ghost stories. I'll just say its creepy to have a Ouija board spell out a name over and over again, and then find that name a week later on a memorial plaque under a tree for a girl who died falling down an elevator shaft looking for her teddy bear. Among a few other thing that Ive seen there at the school...I could go on forever with these...Ive seen alot of creepy ghost stuff over the years....

I'm only calling this a "ghost story" because for the life of us we cannot figure out how this happened. It was a few months back and that night before we went to bed we learned that a long sick relative had passed away. So, although sad...we went to bed and fell asleep. About 3 a.m....we heard this loud crashing/shattering sound....needless to say we shot up out of bed paralyzed with fear and our blood running cold. We thought somebody had broken in....so,my protective instincts kicked in and I headed toward the kitchen ready to destroy whoever it was.....A large serving plate we had on sitting on top of the fridge <i>(centered on top of the fridge, nowhere near the edge)</i> had ended up on the floor smashed to pieces on the opposite side of the kitchen.....as if it was thrown or pushed off the fridge. We don't have any pets like cats or anything that could of knocked the plate on the floor.....let alone launch it across the room. Anyway, that's one of the creepiest things I think that has ever happened to me. We didn't exactly get back to sleep that night. We just layed there thinking <i>"what if we're not alone right now" ?</i>

Several years ago, I was the Florida Area Rep for the American Ghost Society. It put me in position to get all kinds of weird ocurrance calls, and occassionally trips out to various places to check out reocurring hauntings. I don't push my beleifs on anyone, and I know that nothing I say here is gonna persuade anyone of anything, but I will suggest that I was able to disprove or naturally explain away quite a lot of what I was brought in on, and yet, every once in awhile I ran into stuff that I couldn't explain. By itself it doesn't mean I encountered deceased spirits, but I certainly encountered something.I left the society when the head of the society started pushing some weird beleifs regarding time portals and indians that proved to be a little too much for me to be able to accept, and I was asked to "tow-the-line" for his latest book deal, but I didn't agree with his findings at all. I learned quite a bit though, regarding detection equipment, and "proper" ghosthunting, but also learned how useless the findings tend to be with regards to tying the supernatural to an "event" of some kind.

I love ghost hunting, i love camping out at haunted locations, reading books about hauntings and watching Tv shows about hauntings and i can say without a shadow of a doubt... i do not believe in ghosts. never seen one. Sure Ive had weird experiences, but just because i dont know what made that sound, doesnt mean it has to be a ghost.I dont buy orbs at all, i can recreate photo orbs in nearly any situation (indoor, outdoor, rain, no rain, ect) If ghosts are a natural part of the world, then shouldnt ghost be naked? I mean do clothing have thier own spirits as well? Shouldnt the planet be flooded with Cavemen and Animal ghosts?I dont knock anyone who believes, Just sharing my experiences. I never have been involved in an experience that made me feel that it was a ghost for fact. I know some of you have pretty serious stories, thats cool. Im sure some of it must have been pretty crazy.but i wasnt there. I've done some experiements on the subject (had a teacher in high school help me with a few study groups) you can make just about anyone see, hear and feel a "haunting" if given the right set of perrameters. I even caught a few guys lying about thier haunting and their story was a local urban legend that EVERYONE believed in back at my home town. Maybe I'll change my mind in the future... but It'll take more than a "strange" noise or a shadow in the corner of my eye...I do however think its entertaining to go ghost hunting. i do get spooked when I set up camp at an old barn, or cemetary or spend the night in a documented haunted hotel... But thats because I was given a scary backstory, or the place might look creepy... I end up spooking myself... Still fun though!Once again dont think Im insutling anyone for believing in ghost. I am not. I am just sharing my experiences.

I'm an eternal skeptic myself, but I try to keep an open mind. I've had a few unnerving experiences, but I've always been able to find a reasonable explanation for them in the end. I'm a big fan of <i>Ghost Hunters</i>, <i>GHI</i>, the <i>A Haunting</i> series, etc., but I've personally never been on a ghost hunt. It's definitely something I would like to try one day. I guess the closest I've ever come to being truly freaked out was several months ago. It was very early in the morning, around 5 a.m. if I remember right. I work second shift, so I basically stay up all night / morning and sleep during the day. Anyway, I was sitting in my recliner watching television when I felt the chair start to shake. It was nothing crazy, but it was definitely enough to get my attention. My first thought was a sudden gust of wind shaking the house, but when I opened the door it was still as it could be outside. There was also absolutely no traffic at that time of the morning. I have to admit it was a little unnerving at the time. Well, the next afternoon on the way in to work I was listening to a local radio station and heard them talking about the earthquake that occurred in the early morning hours. It didn't even cross my mind at the time because I live in Ohio, and while we do have the occasional earthquake, most of them are not strong enough to be felt at all. So that was my one and only ghost story, and it turned out to be nothing more than mother nature. I have to admit it was a little disappointing.

Clowny,Actually, some theories indicate that physical manisfestations may actually be a "recording" of images, and therefore would include clothing. One thing I learned was that if there was something I saw which I couldn't explain, look for the water. Invariably, there's a drained lake or something. The concept of images being recorded in water, or maybe water-soaked wood. There are some folks out there which seem to be on the brink of discovering something along these lines in a recreatable fashion. Seems like a longshot to suggest conditions might be right to have something like this "just happen", but then again, our entire existance is reliant on quite a series of longshots, so who knows. Unfortunately, the folks that truly study, work, and experiment in this field, and use equipment that can realistically help them, are few and far between. Many of the rest of them have claims to being psychic, and make the great "leaps of faith" that no one can really follow, and end up with nothing in terms of scientific value. Others are hugely experimental, to a point where nothing is properly tested (or investigated) more than once, meaning there's no way to create a basis of comparison. Still others are just out for a good scareing or to prove to others that they aren't scared, and produce nothing except stories. I'd love to get some thing or place that's totally demonstrably "haunted," and then screw around with it until I could predict it's responces, appearance conditions, etc. Instead of working backwards and trying to eliminate possible factors (ie- "hey that door moved" check for gusts, check strings, leaning doorframe, foundation shifts, etc..). Unfortunately, I don't have the money to pursue something like that.BTW- In case you hadn't thought it through, it is IMPOSSIBLE to prove a negative like "a string didn't pull a door shut".. It's possible to provide evidence if a string was used and there's evidence of it, but there's no evidence to find when something "didn't" happen... Much like you can't prove that no one slept with your mother last night... you can suggest it's unlikely, but that's not proof. When I was younger, and starting out in the ghosthunter world, I was under the impression that electricity might attract spirits, due to EMP readings being found in "hotspots". As I got older, the idea evolved to using electricity to help jump-start whatever seemingly paranormal events the location had to offer. Regardless, I thought it'd be neat to have a small device you could turn-on and have it "activate" an area.. you could tuck it in your buddy's wallet or something and let all the weird stuff scare the heck out of them. One man's magic is another man's science. I don't believe in the paranormal, I just beleive that science doesn't know everything there is to know yet. Heck, we didn't even know about plate tectonics until less than 40 years ago, started having home computers 32 years ago, and just found a 10th planet in 2005 (Eris). There's a lot we still don't know.
