How Long Do Your Masks Last?

I know latex eventually rots, but I\'m convinced that mask life has a huge variation in lifespans, right?

Can anyone tell me the oldest mask they still possess that is in around 90% of it\'s original condition?

I have one that is approx. 13 years that is still in near perfect shape.

Can anyone top that? I\'m not trying to make this a contest, I just want to know (considering how much money I have put into my collection) how long the collection will last, considering I take great care of them.

Or can anyone TELL me of a collector who has an unbelievably old mask that is still in greats shape. I have only been collecting for 15 years, so I only have 15 years of research.

Someone please give me info, especially you older collectors....

Masks made today, by independant makers, can last a lifetime. The latex is incredably high quality, and the paint forms a protective layer ontop of that, so unless you subject your masks to extream sunlight for a long period of time, or live in an extreamly humid climate, and don\'t use any kind of powder to coat the inside, I wouldn\'t worry about it! I\'ve had a couple pieces over 20 years myself, they were in pretty good shape, I do have one right now that maybe close to 25 years old, not quite sure, it\'s showing a little age, but I\'m gonna get it restored eventually.

it depends on wich mask, and if you wear it, sweat will literally eat threw some latex (learned the hard way) but ive had a mask not even a year now and its deteriorating, im not saying wich mask tho because im not trying to make less of a mask maker, its all because i wore it to a costume conest at a concert and it felt like 100 degrees in the mask so i sweated alot.

I was hoping to hear good stories from people, as I was getting weary about my investments!

BTW, I never wear my masks, always have them in smoke free, air conditioned, no sunlight rooms, while being displayed on mask stands either foam filled, plastic bag stuffed, newspaper stuffed, or bubble wrap stuffed.

Other than foam fill, does anyone have preference on newspaper or plastic bag stuffed? Is newspaper bad?

I think newpaper can have chemicals in it that arent too good for the rubber. Plus a plastic bag will mold itself into shape, newspaper might stretch the mask.

I know my expensive masks I keep under clear plastic. I\'m working on building an airtight glass display case when I get the time and money.

coat the inside with baby powder , keep them from direct sunlight and no humidity.

yes DON\'T use newspaper! it will stain the mask!
