I so wish there was a way to collectively boycott Paypal, or that there was another way to send money online!! They have simply gotten too big, I am sick of all the hoops they make you jump thru, the ridiculous fees they now collect. And NOW they want my social security number. The guidelines for them filing a form with the IRS is you must have BOTH 200 or more transactions and $20,000 in income. I am nowhere NEAR that benchmark, yet I would have to give them my SS# anyway or they will suspend my account! Really?? I understand regulations for people who do a business thru them, but I am NOT a business account holder. Nor are my numbers anywhere NEAR those! Why do I have to risk them having my SS# when I know they will never use it?

Yup, I HAD to scan my SS number, Drivers licence AND proof of address. They suspended me until I did, even though my bank account and credit card are linked to my Paypal and I had to verify that in person. Sadly, there\'s nothing you can do except bend over and take it, because though there are other ways to send money online, everyone uses Paypal and trusts Paypal so there really is no other option. I\'m real sick of these people as well, just know you\'re not alone.

They wouldn\'t give me an answer, I tried e-mailing them about it multiple times and the only thing they said was it was to "Verify my identity."

I wonder if this is strictly for eBayers sellers only.
It seems like they are wanting the ss to report undeclared income to the government if asked.

i\'m not sure if it\'s strictly for ebay sellers. i\'m guessing if you\'ve received a certain amount of payments from any source you\'re added to the list.
starting in january of this year the government forced paypal to handover any and all transaction records for any paypal member that has 200+ transactions and $20,000+ in payments. that\'s the reason for the SS#. you have to meet both of those requirements in order for the government to take those records. if you meet both of these you will be forced to pay taxes on the payments you\'ve received.

It\'s not for just eBay, I haven\'t sold on eBay in well over a year, almost 2.

I think google is supposed to come out with some new payment system. Ebay/Paypal sux they want too much information and take WAY too much money. I sold an item for 1k on ebay and by the time I payed ebay and paypal I payed out almost $200!! If your using paypal with ebay then then the paypal fees should not apply since they are partners.

The only time paypal should stick in a fee is when you are buy/selling outside of ebay..

Yep, and that makes total sense to me if someone has a business account. I have had a good year selling off some of my old stuff, but I am nowhere NEAR those numbers, but they insist on having my SS# anyway. At that point, in order to do business with them I will have given them my ID, my bank account number, my debit card number and my SS#. Sorry, but it seems a little excessive. I think what they should do is set it up so if you have a business account, you have to provide all that for tax purposes etc. Leave the little guys alone and ask for that info and suspend accounts ONLY if they meet the necessary criteria. They want my info when I KNOW I will never hit their benchmarks unless I decided to start an online business!
