So What Do You Guys Think About Dead-beat Mask Makers?

I agree with you GazAs a collector I've been done a few times now and it does get you down.A big problems for me has been that both times Ive brought from people in America and thinking that paypal is a safe bet has done me wrong both times.The sellers first feed you bull crap about a delay in postage or whatever excuss pops into there head to keep you sweet so that you dont go bashing them on the forums straight away which gives them time to secure a few more orders to un-suspecting customers.Then by the time 45 days has passed on paypals despute functions cut of deadline you've lost your money and the seller is nowhere to be found.As some of you know I also sell stuff but not on a large scaleI take an order I make it and I ship it then I take another, if im doing a limited run I do it in batches and do it first come first serve and most of the time I only ask for payment once I have completed the work and sent the customer a picture to make sure there happy.It's not hard to do it right the problem is with these people is greed and wanting the money without putting in the work.From now on when dealing with cutomers over sea's I plan to open a claim on day 40 with paypal and if the seller comes through then I can send him the money again .

Let me also add that my comments aren't aimed at all mask makers. There's tons of great talent and great customer-based people out there. I've had wonderful deals with several people on this board and others. This is just a case of a few bad apples spoiling the whole bunch for me.

It's not like other collectible hobbies like comic books or vintage toys where the seller can just pack something and ship it..these guys have to get off their ass and make stuff and the concept seems to rarely work..Big reason I left the hobby..just burnt out on it all..From my point of view I'd rather sell everything, save some cash, and buy something that I will truly enjoy.

I can tell you that this a real shame. This looks bad for everyone involved. The so called rest of the world already views us as outcasts and then we have these chumps who make them believe it even more.I have problems with members who aren't even making the masks I'm ordering. I mean I bought a PS2 3 weeks ago off a member and it's not here. I don't know maybe he's making it from scratch?! I had a member take over a month to deliver a mannequin! The mask I ordered from Justin was here quicker than that. The problem is that these guys are artists and they have no idea how to do business. There are few in the "hobby" who can do business and be an artist at the same time.Here is my take:A. ship promptlyB. keep in contactC. Have a box already for the item you are selling. Don't offer something and then claim you have to find a box for it 7 days after I paid you.D. If you have to have your Mom drive you ship something, better ask her before selling something.E. Know who you are dealing with but be willing to give someone new a chance once in a while.F. Only order the number 1 to 3 copy of a mask, those seem to get shipped. G. If at all possible look at their ebay feedback. This is a real indicator no matter what the person tells you.

It's not only the mask makers, but some collectors themselves. If a mask maker isn't screwing you over, it's prob. a collector that is. As long as I have been in this been in this hobby I had never had a bad dealing up until a few months ago. With all the bullsh*t that's I have been seeing and hearing about it just really brings my piss to a boil, and makes me want to sell everything cause I don't need the headache. And lets get on the real here, it doesn't take more the a couple of weeks to make a mask let alone months.

This is one of the few reasons i quit collecting. I had a few bad experiences and lost a lot of money. There are some great guys on here, and some just keep you waiting and waiting, and waiting, ......and waiting!!!!!In my experience, the best guys I dealt with on this forum (actual mask makers, and painters) were...Justin Mabry, Crash Cunningham, Colin Mayne, Dean Jones, Darren (Ruste Dowg) Laken, Daz (Rubbermugs) Gordon. Turnaround was fast, and mask quality and paint jobs top notch!!!!!!

In terms of quality, turnaround-time and overall great artist......Jeremy Bohr was top dog in my opinion. I never had to wait more than 3 weeks for one of his pieces. Case in point he had a break from his other job and came back and sculpted, molded, painted, and delivered the Hatchet Crowley piece in under a month. Try and top that...................Larry

Here's my 2 pennies on the situation. It's all about the money. People like to make money like everyone that breathes but with some mask makers they take on too much and then either get way behind or when the money comes in they spend it and before they know it, they need more materials to make mask orders and have no money. Now since they ran out of money and can't order materials, they wait for the next order to come in so they'll have the money. But guess what? The same cycle happens again, spend the money and can't buy the materials. That's not being a dishonest person, that's just plain irresponsibility. Then we have the ones that are total rip-offs...they get the money you see them ship out a couple items and never hear from them again. I think a mask maker should always keep his/her website updated with their turnaround time at that moment and stick by it. I'd like to get into sculpting and making masks and for me, I will only take on 5 orders at a time. When those are done, then another 5. How can one person take on 20 orders and expect all 20 to be out within a month? That insane! I also agree that the mask maker needs to be the one fully responsible for their actions, communication, customers etc., not their mom! I've dealt with one well known maker that told he had an extra mask and just needed to hair it and I would have it in two weeks. Well that turned into 9 months. All through that 9 months I was told he would find out if his mom sent it out then told to email his mom, then told me it was already sent out, then told me his mom this and his mom that. Grow up and quit blaming mom! It's your business dude, not your mom's! Anyways people, I want to order from a few places and have never dealt with them. If anyone that has dealt with the following people below, could you please let me know if they were good or bad to deal with and what the turnaround time was? I hate to see you guys pack up and leave the hobby and sell your stuff. But when you're dealing with some of these guys, I can imagine how frustraiting and discouraging it can be. To me, communication is so important. Good example, I was one of the guys that ordered a Pascow from Rich. He answered a couple of questions I had before I put a down payment in. A while later, he emailed everyone on the list with pics showing a sculpture update and then again just last week. I have absolute confidence that my mask will arrive. Only bad deal i've come across is dealing with HEH woodworks and I've not heard directly from him in about 15 months. Fortunately, there is definately a fairly good list of collectors you can indeed trust, as well as a few makers. I've dealt with D-Bach over and over, he's always been fantastic... Pugsly was awesome, Dougie's always great to deal with.. lots of collectors here are safe bets to deal with.

I guess i'll add something to this, I have been ripped off 2 times in 6 years(one a mask maker and the other a certain collector we all knew) so I guess thats not too bad. I have slowed dowm ALOT over the summer on buying things because of fear of being ripped off, but I will agree with what Joey said Rich has been keeping us updated with the Pascow bust by showing us pics every couple weeks and thats great! As with members on this board if you are not sure ask around and I am sure you will get info on that person.
