Put your cracks in first, and be sure to lightly seal each layer of paint to give it depth, keep in mind to not over paint, there are many ways to get the results you imagine, try to do some washes, and you will see your cracks come thru nicely, its really trial and error, everyone has there own style, im sure youll do fine eitherway, hope i could help a little, you should check out frightstuff.com/frightforum/, there are some really good tips /tricks there...
