This usually stems from pride and arrogance in the feeling you know something that someone else doesn't know. In other words, they will no longer feel important or "ahead of the game" once other people know these dorky mask/prop "secrets" that they've wasted years of their life to learn. It's really an insecurity on their part, so don't sweat it. When you think about it, it's like trying to be in a geeky version of the free masons or something... You're totally right though; everyone started somewhere.
