Some of them are more memory intensive than others (typically the all-in-one security suites), but I've installed Avast on literally hundreds of systems and it only slightly slowed ones that were already in desperate need of an upgrade. It has 7 scanners that you can enable/disable if you don't use that particular software...IMs, Outlook, etc. Norton, however, is another issue...talk about RAM hog. <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"blink.gif\" />Your first line of defense is yourself, but trust me when I say this (years of experience talking) that most people need an antivirus program because they're just clickety click click click all over the place and "why is my computer so slow...I just bought it 3 months ago!?!" <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /><!--QuoteEnd
<!--QuoteEEndthats your opinion but unless your Microsoft certified like myself and have been building PC's and repairing them for the last 20 yrs from the Amiga's , IBM's and Commdore Vic 20's up to todays systme then you can tell me all about it ummmn k One of my close cohorts Leo Laporte ( undoubtly th ebest in the biz right now ) whenit comes to tech info and skills woudl be also glad to explain the advantges of have a hardware firewall like a Router blocking unwanted data from coming in that you don't want - and one thing i will agree is yourself as being the best line of defense -which is so obivious it needed not be said as thats it logicalbasically keeping up with Windows updates and even insatlling Windows defender can help but that agauin look at it this way No anti virus will make you safe -it's a false sense of sercurity - lets say someone releases a virus into the world/ trojen etc Well your computer amony 1 million others are affected well guess what you have to manually go to your Anit Virus author and update it with the meanings to either eliminate or protect against said virus. In any case defeating the purpose of the anti virus protetion. As most get bugs and when that happens you anti virsu protection ends up being a hinderance as it can lock up your system preventing you from getting said updates/meanings or you have to wait until the company your using free or bought eventually comes up with updated virus protction meanings to add to your list ! Hence i'll repeat defeating the purpose of the said protection. It can only prtect against existing trojens and virus not new ones that get released .

Wow, Loomis. With you being in the IT field that long I would have figured that you could spell a bit better <img src=\"style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"Tongue\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /> Like yourself, been in the PC repair and trouble shooting business since 1984 as well as I am MCSA, MCDBA, MCDST and soon to be .NET certified.I agree, you do need some sort of defense against potential attackers. Even Windows Defender can be of some assistance as well as the standard Windows Firewall but I would seriously suggest Zonealarm for your Firewall needs, Free version : Zonealarmand Avast for your antivirus needs : AvastAlso, If you are looking for Spyware prevention and removal as well, check into Spyware Blaster : Spyware BlasterWith these three you have a better chance of defense than not being protected at all, plus they are free!

You can still get AVG free. When 7.0 expired I downloaded 8.0 and it was totally free as well.

At best at one point in time Panda Anti-virus and firewall was the best out their until they like most became not pay or free-ware but ............................................................................BLOA-WARE !far as my spelling goes. i was using an older version of Dragon Speak ( look it up sometime )..Also with the inclusion of Vista alot of programs just aren't equipped to handle working on the OS and are in constant need of patching and updates just to maintain what little bit not only false but lack of security they so badly provide. But than again it's each to their own at the need of the day - it's liek smoky says only ....YOU! can prevent forest fires !Same applies to browsing and opening attachments- at days end it's really the person responsibility to watch what they are doing
